Temporary Lightness

”Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
— Pablo Picasso
Ongoing, 2019-
Children are the most vital, visible, and multifaceted living beings, representing hope and change for humanity. In addition to lightness and innocence, growth includes many challenges and complex stages. When I became a mother, I understood the significance of childhood in a more down-to-earth way. I started to explore childhood's magic, joy, and mystery in a fictional, conceptual, and staged portrait series. I reflect on many aspects of children growing up in our unpredictable society.
Climate change is one of the most critical issues for our future. The growing generation will have to face it even more concretely. In childhood, the environment plays an important role. The kind of relationship a child develops with nature influences their decisions as an adult. Nature and animals are the most apparent treasures in childhood. The more kids grow with it, the more they will protect it.
I also reflect on the importance of imagination. How free it is in a small child and how it gradually grows into a mold with the upbringing and rules of society. Why do our creativity and vision narrow as our understanding and skills grow? Why do we give up playing? More creative freedom might allow for entirely new solutions in the future.
Mental health starts from childhood and is one of the increasing problems in Western society. Growing up is both exciting and demanding, but most importantly, mandatory. Some experiences leave an eternal mark, a scar a child can carry for life. On the other hand, a supportive comment or act at the right moment can change everything. To be seen and to belong to something is crucial. Also, standing in front of the camera and being visible can be empowering.
If we help our children nurture their imagination and use it as adults, they will become happier survivors. The more resourceful adults children become, the better problem solvers the world will get. One important question I have from childhood, though. When does freedom end, and was it ever?
Started in December 2019. The series contains about 60 portraits and is still work in progress. My goal is to finish it during 2023. I'm planning to make a book about it.
